A spectacular mountain setting

Historic Grasmere is nestled in the mountains of the South Island of New Zealand at 43ºS 142ºE. Situated on State Highway 73 near Arthur’s Pass, 120 km from Christchurch, Grasmere, has an altitude of 700 metres and an alpine climate. With its unsurpassed setting, Grasmere will be remembered for the wild and invigorating landscape, seclusion and beauty.

Summer is warm with average temperatures ranging between 26ºC maximum and 16ºC minimum. Winter temperatures range between 15ºC maximum and 0ºC minimum.

Travel options

There are several travel options for guests to travel to Grasmere Lodge at Arthur’s Pass. Rental car obviously will give guest flexibility to explore the region once at Grasmere, whilst guests may choose to fly in, by light plane or helicopter. An alternative is the TranzAlpine Express between Christchurch and Greymouth , which is said to be one of the six best in the world. The train stops at Cass (the stop near Grasmere) only by prior arrangement. (3 minute drive to the Lodge). Limo transfer can be arranged between Grasmere and Christchurch

From Christchurch Airport:
  • Go straight ahead at the first roundabout by the airport carpark
  • Turn right at the second roundabout, a large main one, into Russley Rd, travel about three kilometres
  • Turn right a at the next roundabout, - Yaldhurst Rd which becomes State Highway 73
  • Follow signs for Arthurs Pass, and go through villages called Kirwee, Darfield and Sheffield, before reaching Springfield.
  • Grasmere is about 90 minutes from Christchurch, and 45 minutes past Springfield.

From Greymouth on the west coast:

  • Travel south on SH 6 and turn on to SH 73 at Kumara Junction.
  • Grasmere is about 30km past Arthur’s Pass
