Hot springs and the great outdoors

This stunning alpine region offers an extraordinary range of activities. Outdoor pursuits such as hiking, fishing, horseriding and hunting are popular; while the mountains, forests, lakes and rivers are the ideal setting for adventure activities like jet boating, rafting, bungy jumping, mountain biking and quad biking. This is a fantastic year-round destination – winter and early spring (June–October) bring snow sports, including heli-skiing, at the nearby Hanmer Springs and Mount Lyford ski areas.

The immediate area is most famous for the award-winning Hamner Springs Thermal Pools & Spa, one of New Zealand’s most popular attractions. Visitors have enjoyed the healing waters here for over 125 years.

Other options include visits to some of the 70 or so vineyards of the Waipara Wine region, dining and shopping at Hanmer Springs village, and a round of golf at one of New Zealand’s best 18-hole country championship courses. On the coast, 135 kilometres away, beautiful Kaikoura offers rugged scenery, excellent seafood, and whale and dolphin watching cruises.
