Excursion 1

(Sun Yatsen Mausoleum & Mingtomb)

Sun Yatsen Mausoleum (Zhongshan Tomb)

Following traditional Chinese architectural elements with a harmonious layout surrounded by pine and cypress trees, the tomb of Dr. Sun Yatsen is an extremely dignified structure. Revered for his role in the Cultural Revolution and the formation of the republic, Dr. Sun Yatsen was a celebrated figure in Chinese history. His tomb is located at the top of a hill, some 73 meters above the ground to symbolize his elevated status.

Ming Tomb (Ming Xiaoling)

The Ming Tomb is one of the largest imperial mausoleums in China. It is the final resting place of the founder of the Ming Dynasty, the peasant emperor Zhu Yuanzhang. There are 12 pairs of giant animal statues, including lions, elephants and mythical unicorn’s guarding the Sacred Avenue that leads up to the tomb. It is local belief that these statues drive away evil spirits from this area.

Visitors can try to imagine the previous splendour of this historical site that once featured 100,000 pine trees planted in a garden environment that was the playground for 1,000 deer. The Ming Tomb was designed to adhere to the ancient principles of Feng Shui and its structure was modelled in the form of a star constellation.

Excursion 2

(Zhan Yuan Garden, Fu Zi Miao and Qin Huai River)

Zhanyuan Garden

Zhanyuan Garden is a sprawling garden whose beauty had captivated Emperor Qianlong prompting him to name it after a famous and romantic Qing Dynasty poem entitled ‘Standing in the Garden as if in Heaven’. This remarkable site is home to the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom Museum and enchanting Chinese performing arts including amusing theatrical plays, music performances played on traditional musical instruments and occasional display of acrobats.

The Fu Zi Miao (Flea Market)

The Fu Zi Miao is one of many other delightful activities in Nanjing. From the mouth-watering aromas of traditional Chinese culinary fare to timeless antiques, this thriving flea market offers visitors unbelievable bargains and priceless discoveries.

QinHuai River

The QinHuai River is a major tributary of the Yangtze River and an enjoyable experience during the day and a remarkable journey at night. This popular river teems with tasty restaurants, bustling flea markets and numerous curio shops on its banks which all magically transform into a lively display of colour as soon as the sun begins to set.

Excursion 3

(Suzhou - The ‘Venice of China’ & Picnic Luncheon)

Suzhou, Venice of China

As the perfect restful place from which to leisurely explore China, Nanjing is also strategically located to other key destinations including Shanghai and Suzhou. Virtually untouched since this quaint little city was first built in 400 B.C., Suzhou is renowned as the ‘Venice of China’. This charming city features old stone bridges and homes with some dating back to the imperial period. Today Suzhou is an official UNESCO heritage site and its unique environs are best appreciated with a relaxing trip on one of their traditional riverboats or pedi-cabs.

The journey includes a delicious picnic luncheon on a traditional riverboat that ventures along the Shantang River, a visit to a historical house by traditional pedi-cab in the old quarter of downtown Suzhou and afternoon tea at Pingjiang Lodge by the river.

The excursion will be led by your butler, departs from Kayumanis at 09.30 am .  minimum of 2 participants required. It includes a delicious picnic luncheon, afternoon tea and an indulging 2 hour spa treatment upon return to Kayumanis followed by a romantic candle light dinner in your private villa.

Excursion 4

(99 ½ House & Calligraphy Lesson)

99 ½ House

A veritable journey back in time, the Nanjing Folklore museum is home to some of the city’s most important cultural and historical artefacts. This unique facility features many interesting exhibits and displays that provide a rare glimpse into typical life during the Ming and Qing Dynasties. In addition to traditional folk handicrafts, the museum also features priceless porcelain, paintings and antique furnishings.

Chinese Calligraphy Lesson

You will have the opportunity to participate in a calligraphy lesson which is perhaps one of the most revered art forms in China and often described as an art of giving form to symbols in an expressive, harmonious and skilful manner. Many calligraphy works are in high demand and are sought after in China. In some circles, calligraphy has earned a reputation as a therapeutic diversion allowing many to seek individual expression with every artful brush stroke. Kayumanis encourages guests to explore this traditional art form with the help of a skilled instructor.

Chaotian Palace

Chaotian Palace is located at Yeshan Hill in the west of Nanjing City. According to legend, the emperor of Wu State cast swords here. The name of Chaotian Palace started to be used in the Ming Dynasty and the present structures, built on a grand scale at the end of the Qing Dynasty, are laid out symmetrically on either side of the axis.
Chaotian Palace was formerly an imperial palace during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) but is now transformed into the Municipal Museum. The palace was once a school for privileged children and also a location for the nobility to worship their ancestors. Imperial times and Ming dynasty court life are re-enacted daily at the palace square, complete with eunuchs, courtiers, guards and dancing girls. The museum is small but contains some excellent bronze pieces.  

Your travel for the day will conclude with a visit to a nearby antique market which provides further insight into the historical treasures that are an important element of Nanjing city.

Excursion 5

(Chiang Kai-shek’s Villa, Jiming Temple and Nanjing Brocade)

Chiang Kai-shek Villa

Chiang Kai-shek’s Villa in the Tangshan Hot Spring Scenic Area is a two-storey stone building with a combined Chinese and Western architectural style. The first floor is semi-subterranean, so it appears to be a one-storey building. The second floor features the bedrooms that are furnished with red carpet, exquisite wall lamps and beautiful oil paintings. The first floor has a luxurious bathroom for two with pipelines connected to the hot spring waters.

Jiming Temple

Located at the east foot of Jiming Mountain, Jiming Temple is one of the famous ancient temples of Nanjing. It was first built on a large scale by Emperor Liang Wudi in 527 with the former name of Tongtai Temple. Emperor Liang Wu Di served as a monk four times and was then required by officials to spend a large sum of money in buying back his freedom. The temple was destroyed by a lightning strike and has since been destroyed, rebuilt and renamed several times.

Black tiles, yellow walls and pearls mounted on back of house are unique features of Jiming Temple. Thailand gave Sakyamuni and Kwan-yin bronze statues to Jiming Temple as gift in 1984. There are also 32 pieces of newly-moulded Kwan-yin statue. There is a well in Jiming Temple. Legend has it that the emperor of the Chen Dynasty led a dissipated life and cared more for pleasure than affairs of state. As a result soldiers of Sui Dynasty captured Nanjing by assault, he and his concubines hid themselves in the well in order to escape the enemy. Rogue stains were left on the wall of the well and hence its name Rouge Well. Now, dozens of female Buddhist nun live in Jiming Temple and it is the only nunnery of its kind in the southeast coastal region. Jiming Temple faces Xuanwu Lake to the north and offers stunning views of the natural beauty of the nearby lakes.

Nanjing Brocade

Nanjing brocade is a traditional silk-weaving craft that is amongst the finest of all other handicrafts in the area. Strong but pliable in texture, Nanjing brocade features simple and vigorous decorative patterns in rich and bright colours with gold thread used to form its unique style. Nanjing brocade was once used by members of the imperial family and is now worn as part of the decorative clothing for minority groups. The cloth is also a high-grade export commodity.
